A Therapy Pathway for Children with Apraxia and Other Motor Speech Conditions:

Children with apraxia and other motor speech conditions have trouble stringing sounds together to speak simple words.

Instead of trying to teach them one sound at a time (like the Articulation approach), or a whole class of sounds (like the phonology approach)…

…the motor speech approach starts with combining just one vowel and one consonant together to produce very short words.

Then, over time, we build up their ability to say longer and longer words.

This is the best way to help a child with motor speech problems make the fastest progress in speech intelligibility.

And our program has everything you need to target those first word shapes: CV, VC, and CVC Words!

Skills Covered:

Imitation:

If the child is not already able to imitate words, we have a pre-work section that will improve their imitation skills.

This allows us to build up to being able to imitate sounds and words.

Here are the steps to the imitation portion of this program:

(Note! If the child is already able to imitate simple words, you can skip this part!)

  1. Imitating whole body actions
  2. Imitating actions near or with the mouth
  3. Imitating sound effects
  4. Imitating speech sounds

Producing CV, VC, and CVC Words

Once the child is able to imitate sounds, we’ll move on to imitating single words.

(Or, you can start here if they’re ready!)

Each page contains a set of 3 words for you to target for one week, along with activities and play suggestions.

Here are the word sets:

  • “oh” words: no, go, whoa
  • “ee” words: me, see, wee
  • “oo” words: boo, you, two
  • “i” words: hi, bye, my
  • VC words: eat, out, up
  • VC words 2: in, on, off
  • “d” CVC words: done, down, dad
  • “b” CVC words: ball, big, bad
  • “t” CVC words: get, want, put
